Not everyone out there knows exactly what a perm is. For starters, perm is short for permanent because it doesn’t last very long. A perm is a hairstyle that millions of women get when they visit their salon. It is the chemical and/or thermal treatment of hair to make the hair wavy, curly, or straight. Many women get a perm prior to the prom, a wedding, a banquet or other special events they are attending during their lifetime. Perms can be fine tuned to give the patron of the salon exactly what type of wave they would like in their hair. We have ten tips for people looking to get a perm.
The first tip is that perms are best for people who have not had their hair colored because the chemicals in a perm are too harsh for heavily highlighted hair. If you aren’t sure whether or not your hair can withstand a perm, you should talk to your stylist about the options. The stylist will be able to examine your hair and determine whether or not it can handle a perm. Also, the thicker your hair is the better the perm will take to your hair.
Depending on how long you wait at your salon and how talented your stylist is helps to determine how long it will take for your perm to be created at the salon. They typically take anywhere from an hour to two hours to perfect and it also depends on the quickness of your stylist and how long your hair is. It takes roughly 28 hours for a perm to settle so don’t worry about how you look when it is complete at the salon because it more than likely will look different one day later. Perms last anywhere from two to six months.
Perms aren’t as popular as they used to be, back in the 1980s, so finding the perfect stylist to take care of your hair can be difficult to do. Call around to various salons to see who has the most experienced stylist, which can be hard to find, because some salons do not even employ a perm specialist anymore. When you are getting a perm done make sure that you bring pictures with you so the stylist knows exactly what you want your hair to look like. Before the stylist puts your head under water for the initial wash, you should sit down and tell her exactly what you don’t want your hair to look like or to have.
The tightness of the curls in your perm depends on the tightness of the rods being used in the perm by the stylist. If you don’t want curls that are too tight you should ask your stylist what rods can be used and then you pick the rod. Not all hair is easy to curl so make sure that your stylist knows how to handle your hair before performing the perm. Do not deep condition your hair 24 hours prior to the perm or it will not take effect.
