Avoiding Mild Exercise Induced Asthma Attacks

For people who suffer from asthma, exercise is one of the common triggers of attacks. The increased need for air during exercise can trigger a person's asthma, however exercise is a good way to improve your overall health, including increasing your lung capacity. So what's the answer to this paradox?

Firstly, choose an appropriate form of exercise. Swimming tends to be one of the best because the air is neither dry nor irritating. The stretching and muscle extension that goes along with swimming can also help to keep the chest and bronchial muscles loose.

Don't exercise outside when the air is dry and cold. Cold, dry air is a common trigger for asthma attacks and during exercise it can be that much worse. If you can't avoid it, try wearing a face mask to help trap the moist, warm air for you to breathe.

Don't exercise when pollen counts are up or the air quality score is low. Again, during exercise you will be breathing harder and will take in more of the irritants in the air.

Finally, use your inhaler roughly 15 minutes prior to exercising. Taking a puff or two from your inhaler before exercising can help to relax your bronchial tubes and may help you avoid an attack.

These tips are a starting point and may help you to avoid exercise induced asthma attacks, while still getting the benefits of exercise. As with any condition however, it's always best to consult with your doctor to get their advice.
