Living With An Iodine Allergy

Exactly what do you need to know about an iodine allergy? Are you allergic to iodine? If you have never been in contact with iodine how would you know?

Are you allergic to fish?
Most people who have an iodine allergy find think they are allergic to fish because they have an allergic reaction when they eat seafood. This is because the largest naturally occurring source of iodine is dissolved in seawater.

Just because a person is allergic to fish or shellfish does not mean that it is because of the iodine. It is possible to be allergic to fish for other reasons. It is very hard to determine if you have iodine allergies or sensitivity.

Uses of iodine
Iodine is used in the medical community. The two main uses are topically as an antiseptic and as a dye. Common table salt contains iodine as well.

People who develop an allergic reaction to topically administered iodine do not necessarily also indicate that they are allergic to iodine when consumed. When donating blood it is common to be asked if you are allergic to iodine, it is used to sterilize the area around the artery. The solution they are using also contains Povidone and you might be having an allergic reaction to it instead of the iodine.

Symptoms of an iodine allergic reaction

  • Experience difficult breathing
  • Swelling of the throat and tongue
  • Anaphylactic shock
  • A rash on the skin around the area exposed to iodine

You might have an iodine sensitivity.
With iodine sensitivity, you can experience fever, excessive sweating or nausea. If you are injected with iodine and suffer extreme symptoms, you would be diagnosed with an iodine allergy. If you see a rash on your skin after applying iodine, you will more than likely have an allergy to the iodine.

For these reasons, how to know if you have an iodine allergy is difficult unless you actually have an allergic reaction. If you eat fish and experience an upset stomach, nausea or vomiting, it could be the oils from the fish causing your reaction. During an x-ray however, you would know for sure you are allergic to iodine. The difficulty in breathing is the most obvious indicator.

If you need help with answering the question, how to know if you have an iodine allergy, you might need to visit an allergist to have a skin test done. If you plan to have x-rays done requiring the use of iodine injection and you have experienced nausea or other symptoms when eating fish or using iodine on the skin, you need to have a skin test done to be safe. Not everyone will have the same reactions to iodine allergies, therefore, there is no one answer that completely answers the question. It is always better to be safe than sorry with your health.
